A clinical evaluation is an assessment of skills related to safe driving and is conducted by a licensed occupational therapist. Client factors and performance skills assessed are range of motion, strength, brake reaction time, vision, visual perception, cognition, and endurance.
Clients will receive a report that identifies client barriers to safe driving and recommendations for a behind-the-wheel evaluation, adaptive equipment assessment, or referrals for additional services.
When clients have a documented clinical evaluation followed by a behind-the-wheel evaluation, they are eligible for license enhancements or restrictions that can protect them legally in the case of an accident.
A behind-the-wheel evaluation takes place in a dual-controlled vehicle that has the capacity for clients to trial adaptive driving equipment. These evaluation types are administered by a certified driver education instructor (CDI). Client factors and performance skills assessed are observation, communication, speed adjustment, vehicle positioning, time and space judgement and vehicle response.
Based on a total score, recommendations from a behind-the-wheel evaluation can include continuing driving with no restrictions, return to driving when vehicle is equipped with adaptive equipment, continuing driving with restrictions consistent with Michigan state laws, participation in driving training, and temporary or permanent cessation of driving.
